Golf Course Maintenance at The Federal Club

Welcome to the golf course maintenance page at The Federal Club. On this page you will find information on our key staff, course conditioning philosophies, monthly updates and useful links regarding turf care. We hope that this page can give you a little insight into how and why we manage the golf course the way we do. Enjoy and don't be afraid to ask us questions along the way!!!

Our Conditioning Philosophy

We manage the conditions at The Federal Club for firmness and speed. We don't just mean this with respect to the putting greens, but with respect to all of the playing surfaces. From the fairways to the approaches, we want to see the golf ball land receptively, but firmly. We manage this way so that the golfer gets the utmost enjoyment out of a well struck golf ball. Of course in Richmond, Virginia it is hard to manage cool season grass with firmness and speed while keeping it lush and green. As such, particularly in the summer months, we push our turf in an effort to create great playability. Although green is good, fast and firm is better.

Title: Golf Course Superintendent
Education: Associate of Agriculture- Landscape and Turf Management, Virginia Tech
Past Experience: Spring Creek Golf Club, Two Rivers Country Club, and The Tartan Golf Club
Bio: Ryan was thrilled to be returning to The Federal Club as the new Superintendent. He served as the assistant superintendent at TFC from February 2015 to March 2017. Prio to returning to The Federal Club in May of 2022, Ryan spent 5 years as the Superintendent at Spring Creek Golf Club. You are sure to see Ryan around the course with his ride along buddy and border collie, Geezer. Title: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Education: B.A. History and Minor in Classical Literature, Hampden-Sydney College

Two Year Golf Turf Management Professional Certificate, Rutgers University

Past Experience: Lakeside Park Club, Country Club of Virginia (Westhampton), Cypress Creek

Bio: Having grown up on a tree farm, playing golf in grade school, and working golf maintenance between semesters of college, Will found he had a calling for the industry. In 2019, he moved from his family home in Suffolk, Va to Richmond in order to pursue this new found passion. Will is recently engaged to his fiancee, Taylor, with wedding plans in May of 2023. When not working or playing golf, Will likes to barbecue, travel, and enjoy time with friends and family.

Adam Toombs

Title: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

Education: B.S.A. Sports and Recreation Management, James Madison University

Bio: Adam previously worked as an elementary school teacher and during his summers off began working at The Federal Club in 2015. He began serving as an Assistant Superintendent for the golf course in the Spring of 2021. Adam is newly engaged, and will be getting married in January of 2022. In his time not spent at the golf course working, Adam coaches baseball at Atlee High School, loves to golf, and spends time with his dog, Finley, and his fiancée.
